Aims of the Institution
The Institution aims to be involved in many aspects of environmental science. Some of these aims and activities have been listed below.
- To promote the role of environmental sciences and sustainable development in higher education, the workplace, the professions and society at large.
- To promote inter-professional practice for environmental science and sustainable development professionals through the application of interdisciplinary and systems thinking.
- To develop high professional standards, competencies and ethics for environmental professionals through accreditation of qualifying courses and accredited continuous professional development.
- To promote the environmental sciences and sustainable development in careers education and guidance.
- To disseminate appropriate and timely information and opinion for the benefit of members and society at large.
- To provide professional and learned advice on environmental sciences and sustainable development.
Activities
Supporting Environmental Professionals and their Careers
- Providing enquiry / network information through the IES Offices
- Supporting the IES membership
- Promoting and developing CPD and research for professional development
- Awarding Chartered Environmentalist status through SocEnv
- Awarding Chartered Scientist status through the Science Council
- Acting as the principal partner in Professional Practice for Sustainable Development (PP4SD)
- Publishing the Environmental Scientist journal
- Producing the Envirosci News e-newsletter
- Providing information on environmental science careers
- Offering short term internship opportunities
Promotion and support of Environmental Science
- Contributing to the promotion of environmental sciences internationally
- Supporting specialised environmental professional bodies such as the IAQM
- Aiding disciplinary research
- Representing environmental science professionals on the European Network of Environmental Professionals, the Science Council and the Society for the Environment
- Supporting initiatives that promote sustainable development across the professions
- Founder member of the Society for the Environment
- Responding to consultations from government and other organisations
- Presenting the John Rose Award, the Ian McCrae Travel Award and the IES VP Prize
- Running the Burntwood Lecture
Supporting the Education of Environmental Sciences
- Supporting research into the environmental science discipline in higher education
- Supporting environmental science higher education through collaboration with CHES and GEES
- Accrediting higher education and further education programmes
- Providing free Student Membership for those studying on accredited programmes
