What is associate membership?

For individuals who hold a relevant degrees or equivalent qualifying experience. You might be someone who has finished university and is starting out in the environmental sciences sector or someone later in their career but whose job is only partially environmental science.

Is it for me?

Associate membership is a professional designation so confers that you have reached a certain standard within your career. As an Associate Member you will receive our journal four times a year and our monthly e-newsletter. You will have exclusive access to the Members area on our website, with news, jobs and events. We will support your career goals by helping you with CPD, creating networking opportunities and supporting you making the right career decisions.

What's next for my career?

You will have begun a journey on an environmental career path which could take you to Chartered status.

Helping you find a job

The IES runs two schemes to assist IES members currently looking for work in the field of environmental sciences:

  • The ‘Into Work’ Scheme is for recent graduates who are starting out in the environmental sciences sector.
  • The ‘Back to Work’ Scheme is dedicated to unemployed members who are looking for work in this field.

A number of services have been developed specifically for members of these schemes to support them in finding their chosen career.

Associate profile

Naomi works as a Research and Development Scientist for Coldharbour Marine Ltd. Whilst studying a BSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography, her research into microbial associations of starfish stirred her interest in marine microbiology. She continued her education by studying a European Masters in Water and Coastal Management, a course run jointly by the University of Cadiz, Spain, and the University of Plymouth.
