Thinking & Acting Sustainably: Profile of a 21st Century Professional...10/12/08
This one day workshop in London will bring together professionals from different areas to engage in practical activities and dialogue on sustainability and sustainable development.  It is intended to explore ideas on how best to integrate sustainable development principles into professional practice. Burntwood Resources available online... 24/11/08
This year's Burntwood Lecture was given by Tony Juniper, former director of Friends of the Earth, on the topic of 'Prospects for a Sustainable Society: What is the correct role for science?' The presentations, a podcast and photos from this year's event have now been added to our events resourses page.

October Journal Published... 27/10/08
The latest edition of the Environmental Scientist,entitled Water, Wildlife and People and exploring the theme of ecosystem services, has now been released online. Members can download an electronic copy in the resources area of the website. The previous edition concluding our look at the Urban Environment has now been released into the public domain on our journal archive page.

New Burntwood Speaker Announced... 13/10/08
The IES is pleased to announce that Tony Juniper, former director of Friends of the Earth, will be now be giving this year's Burntwood Lecture. He will be speaking on the topic of 'Prospects for a Sustainable Society: What is the correct role for science?' You can request tickets by contacting the IES Office.

Burntwood Tickets Available... 29/09/08
The IES is pleased to announce that tickets are now available to all members for the annual Burntwood Lecture. Tickets will be made available to student members and members of the public who can prove a special interest in the topic. This year lecture on 12th November will be given by Baroness Barbara Young, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, who will speak on ‘Energy and the Environment’. You can request tickets by contacting the IES Office.

IES launches John Rose Award... 16/07/08
The IES is pleased to announce the launch of the John Rose Award to publicise a piece of outstanding post-graduate environmental science research that will inform and motivate the general public. This £1,000 grant, given in memory of the IES' founder, will be award to a project that demonstrates both innovative, quality research in the environmental sciences as well as the capacity to disseminate findings to the general public. The grant will be used to promote the project as widely as possible and so maximise its value. See our new awards page for further details.

Not a Bore! Issues of Tidal Energy Capture in the Severn Estuary

This free event on 30th June from UWE, the EA and the IES will comprise of four short scene setting presentations exploring the engineering, legal and planning issues and the environmental implications of harnessing tidal power from the estuary. A general discussion will follow. Further details here.

GEES Subject Centre

The GEES Subject Centre has set aside funding for 2008-9 to support small-scale learning & teaching projects for one year. The funding, normally in the range £2, 000 - £5, 000, will be awarded by open competition to projects that enhance student learning and / or enrich the learning and teaching research literature in one or more of the above three disciplines. Further information can be found here. The deadline for proposals is the 2nd of June 2008.
