November Journal Published: The Greenest Games?...30/11/2009
The latest edition of the Environmental Scientist: The Greenest Games? has been published. This edition has focused on the forthcoming Olympic Games in London, assessing the impacts, benefits and legacies that may result from 2012 and looking back to past Olympic events. This previous edition, published in conjunction with the Environment Agency and the SAMI Consulting, outlining future environmental risks has now been released into the public domain on our journal archive page.

Subscription Price Freeze

With the economic crisis the Institution recognises that budgets will now tighter than ever. In response, the IES is pleased to announce that it will be freezing its subscription fees across all membership categories at 2009 rates. Unemployed and retired members pay 50% of normal professional fields. The reasons for joining and remaining a member of the IES are varied: some members are looking for information and support, whilst others enjoy the opportunity to influence government and other policy makers. We believe that membership of the Institution is a valuable asset for any environmental professional and exceptional value for money.

Professor Bob Watson, Chief Scientific Advisor, gave the keynote address at the Burntwood Lecture 2009 on the 11th November. The title of his lecture was 'Using the Environmental Sciences for a Sustainable Future'. The evening also included the presentation of the John Rose Award to Carly Daniels of the University of Plymouth. The Award includes a grant of £1000 to support the publicising of her research project on on developing and understanding the use of natural dietary biotic supplements in lobsters.of the evening is how environmental sciences have and should inform our strategic planning. Sir David King delivers Gareth Roberts Science Policy Lecture... 13/11/2009
On Tuesday 20th October 2009 Professor Sir David King delivered the second Gareth Roberts Science Policy Lecture to a packed out auditorium at the Royal Aeronautical Society. The audience represented a diversity of professionals from sectors including government, business and industry, professional bodies and learned societies, charities, universities, and the media. If you missed Sir David’s inspiring call-to-action – or want to hear some highlights from the event – please listen to the Science Council's podcast . Want to become a Chartered Environmentalist but don't feel that you have enough time? The Institution is running a new 'CEnv in a Day' workshop on the 13th October. In a morning session candidates will be advised on editing their Stage 1 & 2 reports, interviews will be conducted in the afternoon session. We expect this workshop to be extremely popular and places are limited. Candidates will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis, so register you interest now by emailing here.

Thinking & Acting Sustainably: Profile of a 21st Century Professional, Bristol, 13th October... 22/09/2009
This one-day workshop will bring together professionals from different areas to engage in practical activities and dialogue on sustainability and sustainable development.  It is intended to explore ideas on how best to integrate sustainable development principles into professional practice. Facilitators from Professional Practice for Sustainable Development will work with participants to develop methods for approaching and resolving environmental issues.  They will base their teaching around the particular skills, experience and needs of the individual attendees.

New Burntwood Speaker... 27/08/2009
The IES is pleased to announce that Professor Bob Watson, Chief Scientific Advisor, will be now be giving the keynote address at this year's Burntwood Lecture. The Lecture will be held at the Royal Society in London on the 11th November. The theme of the evening is how environmental sciences have and should inform our strategic planning. This free event also features the presentation of the John Rose Award. Professor Robert Watson has been the Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) since September 2007. He ultimately is responsible for the broad range of science that falls under Defra's remit. His main role is to provide ministers with the best possible scientific advice and build on existing measures to ensure that science and technology are used to inform policy. He also supports the UK Government’s scientific work on minimising the effects of climate change and improving sustainability by promoting consistency across Defra and working together with other Government departments. Robert Watson was previously at the World Bank where he was the Chief Scientist and Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development. He has also held senior positions at NASA and, more recently, at the White House, where he was responsible for ensuring that science underpinned policy making. The latest edition of the Environmental Scientist: The Uptake of Emerging Science into Strategic Planning has been published. This journal, published in conjunction with the Environment Agency and the SAMI Consulting, outlines future environmental risks. The journal will aid professionals in adressing environmental management on a strategic basis. Members can download an electronic copy in the Members' section of the website. The previous edition looking at ecosystem services has now been released into the public domain on our journal archive page.

Non-Exhaust Pollution Minisite Launched... 08/06/2009
Emissions from tyre-wear, brake wear, re-suspended road dust and corrosion of engine parts have been shown to equal or surpass the contributions made to atmospheric pollution made by exhaust emissions. The 2008 John Rose Award winner, Samantha Lawrence has used part of her £1000 grant from the IES to create an exciting website to inform the public on the issue of non-exhaust pollution. She has also launched a petition to prompt the Government to investigate non-exhaust emissions to reduce atmospheric particles, improving air quality and reducing premature deaths.

2009 John Rose Award launched... 27/05/2009
The IES is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2009 John Rose Award. The John Rose Award is open to postgraduate students who have completed (or in the writing-up stages of) an outstanding piece of work, which has the potential to motivate people and facilitate environmental improvement. The Award is a £1000 grant to enable the winner to promote their research to the public, inspiring positive environmental change and helping postgraduate students promote themselves and their work within the environmental sector.

PP4SD have developed a new training manual for sustainability. It is aimed at professionals working in the voluntary, public and private sectors. Burntwood Speaker Announced... 22/03/2009
The 3rd Annual Burntwood Lecture, organised by the IES, will be held on the 11th November. The keynote speaker will be Paul Leinster, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency. This event is certain to be as succesful as previous years and provides an excellent opportunity for professionals, scientists and guests to gain insight into some important topics in the splendid surroundings of the Royal Society.

PP4SD Launches Online Sustainability Forum...26/02/2009
A new online Special Interest Group (SIG) has been launched to debate sustainability issues by PP4SD and PARN. The forum is aimed at professionals from a wide range of disciplines and its remit is to disseminate knowledge, share best practice and discuss ways to overcome barriers to sustainability.
