Introduction

Welcome to the new look EnviroSci Newsletter. The new html design means you are able to see all the articles without having to scroll down very far and click on any which interest you. It also won't fill your inboxes with 1mb files, unlike the old pdf version. We intend to continue impoving the newsletter in the next few months adding images and extra links. There will undoubtedly be a couple of technical hitches, so if this email doesn't display correctly in your inbox, let us know and we will try to fix the problem for future editions.

Cities and Climate Change: Response and Adaptation

Sarah Shubinsky

Cities around the world are waking up to the potential risks posed by climate change, with policymakers from Paris to Philadelphia planning how best to adapt to heatwaves, droughts and floods.

This article presents a brief overview of how selected cities plan to adapt to climate change. In some cases, cities vulnerable to high temperatures and flooding have had relevant adaptation strategies for some time, whilst others have begun to respond specifically to climate change. Hotter countries may be able to share best practice with their temperate counterparts as the latter prepare to deal with potentially warmer weather. read more....

Lawson, Nigel – An Appeal To Reason: A Cool Look At Global Warming

Sachs, Jeffrey – Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet

Reviewed by Harry Joll

Adherents of national stereotyping will enjoy the very different approaches Nigel Lawson and Jeffrey Sachs take to climate change. Both men take a largely economic view from very different perspectives. Lawson was a key economic player in the Thatcher cabinet; Sachs, a liberal American, is a high-profile adviser to international governments on development economics. The former refuses to deal in those "attractively alliterative weasel words 'climate change'", aiming his 106 pages instead at the alarmist picture painted of global warming. Sachs’ much larger book goes in the opposite direction, proposing that environmental degradation, poverty, population and international co-operation can and must be tackled together. read more....
