Burntwood
The IES is pleased to announce that tickets are now available to all members for the annual Burntwood Lecture. Tickets will be made available to student members who can prove a special interest in the topic. This year lecture on 12th November will be given by Baroness Barbara Young, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, who will speak on ‘Energy and the Environment’. You can request tickets by emailing the IES Office.
BBC Natural History Unit seeks Environmentalists
The BBC are developing a new Series called ‘To the Ends of the Earth’ and looking for 9 people with a deep and longstanding passion for the natural world and for wildlife of all shapes, sizes and description. They hope to find people with an active interest in the UK's wildlife and environment, especially in an academic or sustainability guise. The 9 people eventually selected will be given the opportunity to spend 10 weeks in some of the most remote corners of the world as they face a number of training challenges with a view to winning a year's contract with the world famous BBC Natural History Unit. Website Poll
The Institution has recently added a poll feature to the website. This will allow us to ascertain the opinions of visitors to the website on moot environmental questions. This month's question is "Does the UK Government’s approval of the new Kingsnorth coal-fired power station prove that it is not committed to tackling climate change?" At the time of press 82% of respondents think it does. Add your vote by visiting our homepage.

New PP4SD Materials
PP4SD in conjunction with Swansea University have developed four sets of training materials on sustainable development. The materials are primarily targeted at Agricultural Manufacturing, Aquaculture, Environmental Management and Fisheries Management and are available in both English and Welsh and are free to download. New EFAEP Website Launched
The European Federation of Associations of Environmental Professionals (EFAEP) is an Association of environmental experts from all over Europe. The IES is a member of EFAEP. There new website, which includes presentations from their recent conference on biofuels. The increasing influence of Efaep can be gauged by watching this video of Stavros Dimas, European Commissioner for the Environment, addressing the conference.
Survey of Pending EU Environmental Legislation
The EFAEP Survey of Environmental Legislation is a detailed list of ongoing EU legislative projects in the field of environmental
protection. The latest edition can be found here (pdf file).
One Hundred Months
A new campaign which claims we have only one hundred months to prevent runaway climate change has been launched online. They have a 'Tell your friends' tool, so you can spread it further, and get your circles of people engaged in taking monthly action. Time is quickly running out, it's actually closer to 99 months now!

Free Subscription to a new online publication
All members of the IES have been offered a free online subscription to Energy & the Environment through SocEnv. This former Defra publication is bi-monthly and will regularly feature an article from SocEnv.

Sandbag: Launch of new grass roots movement enabling action to tackle climate change
Over the next 5 years, permits for 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions will be handed out in the UK alone. To combat this staggering figure, a campaign against climate change was launched on 16th September. It's called Sandbag and it's aimed at empowering ordinary people to take active steps toward reducing the level of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere. read more....
Car industry splutters in effort to cut pollutants and emissions
Car manufacturers are making uneven progress in reducing CO2 emissions and exhaust pollutants from their latest models, according to a new report released last month by EcoTest, Europe’s most comprehensive environmental assessment programme for vehicles. read more....
