IES News
Congratulations
We are pleased to announce that our Honorary Secretary, Jenny Blumhof, has been elected onto the board of the Science Council. Our thanks go to her for giving up her time to represent the interests of the IES in this important umbrella group.
Careers Website
The IES is compiling a website to inspire and encourage students and school leavers to take up careers within the environmental sciences. We are looking to interview/profile people who have a history within the environmental sector and who are involved in excitng and challenging careers at present. If you fit this profile please get in touch with Alex Fairhead.
CEnv in a Day
Want to become a Chartered Environmentalist but don't feel that you have enough time? The Institution is running a new 'CEnv in a Day' workshop on the 1st April. In a morning session candidates will be advised on editing their Stage 1 & 2 reports, interviews will be conducted in the afternoon session. We expect this workshop to be extremely popular and places are limited. Candidates will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis, so register you interest now by emailing here.
New Arrival
We would like to welcome Claudia Amphlett to our team in the office. She has taken over the role vacated by Yalda Davis who we wish all success in her future endeavours. Claudia is our 'Education Coordinator' and she has responsibility for CHES/IES accredition of university degrees. Claudia splits her time between the IES office, the British Ecological Society and drinking strange flavours of herbal tea.
IAQM Fellowship
In response to requests from its members the Institute of Air Quality Management has created a new Fellowship grade. You can apply for this grade using the application form available on the IAQM membership page.
Sustainability Audit of the Office
As a follow up to 2005 environmental audit of the office, staff undertook a new audit of our practices utilising The Natural Step (TNS) framework. With coaching from our Vice-Chair, Dr Mark Everard, we established the current state of our 'Footprint', 'Our Vision' of where we should be, and a 'Route Map', detailing how we would make the required changes. The audit found that as an office we can undertake certain measures to improve our sustainability such as switching suppliers (already done in the case of electricity), changing our behaviour patterns and reducing waste. The audit also recommended an increased in the use of video-conferencing and contacting suppliers to influence their behaviour. The TNS framework can aid in determining environmental impact decisions. An interesting case study of changing the paper used for the journal from '100% Recycled' to 'FSC approved' has been added to the website.
On yer bike
As part of our sustainability 'drive' at the IES we are proposing to reduce the impact of our travelling to and from the office. During the audit it was suggested that a staff bike would be a good initiative. If any members know of a bike in the London area that needs a good home please get in touch.
Vice President's Prize Winner
Congratulations to Danielle Johnson who won this year's IES Vice President Prize for her dissertation on 'Landscape hazard mapping of a beach resorts in Babbacombe Bay, Devon using a GIS framework'. The project focused on slope instability and subsequent hazards and used GIS to highlighted those areas in the bay that are susceptible to 'mass movements'. Results found that geological structure was the most significant factor in landslide susceptibility, followed by vegetation cover. Danielle found GIS to be a very useful tool for modelling susceptibility and producing a risk map. Danielle is currently applying for PhD opportunities and has worked for Somerset Drainage Board Consortium as a GIS specialist since graduating. The IES VP Prize is awarded to the best dissertation related to environmental science submitted by a student within the UWE Department of Geography and Environmental Management.

Restoring London's Rivers
The Environment Agency has announced a plan to rejuvinate 15km of waterways in London for the benefit of wildlife and people. The IES highlighted the terrible state of many of Britain's urban waterways in the June edition of the Environmental Scientist. Many Thames tributaries have long been covered and uncared for for centuries and The London Rivers Action Plan will aim to redress the long standing issue.

IES Members' Survey 2008
In December 2008 the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) surveyed a sample of its membership to find out how much the various services provided by the Institution were valued. An online survey with a sample size of one hundred responses was used. The results showed that, overall, satisfaction has increased since the previous survey in 2007. read more....
