IES News

New Office Office move
The Institution has relocated to a new location at 34 Grosvenor Gardens, London, SW1W 0DH. Please update your records. The move was not without incident; mistakes by our internet provider left us without internet for a week and a faulty boiler meant the office was plunged into sub-zero conditions around Christmas. Typing in gloves proved to be a difficult task! It was for these reasons that we were unable to send out a December edition of EnviroSci News. Please accept our apologies for this and any delays in responding to membership enquiries during the past few weeks.

2009 Membership Questionnaire Results
Every year IES surveys a sample of its membership to find out the degree to which various membership services are evaluated. Click here to see the findings.

Free book
IES member Rolf Jucker's book, Our Common Illiteracy: Education as if the Earth and People Mattered, which was reviewed in our December 2007 EnviroSci News, is now available to read online for free (search for Rolf Jucker).

Food 2030
Defra have published a report “Food 2030” outlining the Government’s new food strategy. The report highlights issues to be taken into consideration in order to produce more food in ways that protect and enhance the natural environment including: investment in the skills and knowledge that will help the industry prosper; improved labelling; reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the food chain and cutting food waste. The next IES journal will focus on the environmental impact of food production.

ADM-HEA essay competition
We are now half way through the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development which, led by UNESCO, ‘seeks to integrate the principles, values and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.’ ADM-HEA is running a competition for students on UK-based art, design or media higher education courses to enter this year’s essay competition and answer the question, 'Learning to live sustainably – how can your subject area contribute?', in an essay of around 1000 words.

2010 Green Gown Awards
Now in their sixth year and administered by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the Awards recognises the exceptional initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK to become more sustainable.

New research calculates the real value of work
Hospital cleaners are worth more to society than elite City bankers, according to new analysis from nef. Their new report, Report CoverA Bit Rich?, uses new quantification techniques to calculate the value created for society by a range of different professions. For each, the authors measured the conventional economic returns, such as the number of jobs created, as well as key environmental impacts, including climate change effects, and social impacts. Weighing up the positive and negative economic, environmental and social impacts produced an overall result for each occupation.

International Year of Biodiversity
2010 is the international year of biodiversity. In this article the executive secretary of the UN Convention, Ahmed Djoghlaf, outlines what can be done to overcome biodiversity loss.

Call for Members of Advisory Board and Review Panel for the ULI Energy Efficiency Exchange
Reducing energy consumption in buildings is an environmental, economic and social priority. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) has developed a series of initiatives to identify solutions, encourage collaboration and make a dramatic difference in how we address this challenge. The ULI are now looking for industry leaders and practitioners to join as members of the Exchange Advisory Board and the Exchange Peer Review Panel. The Exchange Advisory Board will comprise of industry leaders and experts in their field recognised nationally for their contribution to energy efficiency in the built environment. Meetings will take place once a year with conference calls for quarterly updates. Members of both groups will benefit from contributing to this unique and timely project and will have excellent networking opportunities and the potential to showcase their work. If you are interested in nominating yourself or another person, please contact jbaum@uli.org.

New Discovery may help manage Nanoparticle Wastes from Consumer Products

NaoparticleA new discovery about nanoparticle behaviour in sewage treatment plants could improve the environmental management of nanoparticle wastes from foods, cosmetics, medicines, cleaners and personal care products. The study, published in Environmental Science and Technology, simulated primary sewage treatment to show that coating silica nanoparticles with a detergent-like material (surfactant) made the nanoparticles interact with components of the sewage to form a solid sludge. read more...

Climate failure in Copenhagen

CopenhagenThe Society for the Environment is deeply disappointed with the lack of results of the Copenhagen Climate Conference. Sara J. Scherr and Sajal Sthapit - Mitigating climate change through food and land use

Reviewed by Anna Ranuzzi

Book coverClimate change regulators are sensitive to the idea that no strategy for mitigating global climate change can be complete or successful without reducing emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land uses. However, it is only recently that these types of initiatives have started to get to the forefront of government actions. read more....
