Ian McCraeIan McCrae
The IES and IAQM are sad to note the death on 12th February of Dr Ian McCrae. Ian was an internationally-respected air quality scientist and was instrumental in setting up IAQM. His former employer TRL has set up a memorial webpage for people to leave tributes. Left messages will be passed to Ian's family. The funeral will take place at 11.30am on 1st March at Chilterns Crematorium, Amersham.

2010 AGM
The 37th Annual General Meeting of the Institution of Environmental Sciences will be held on Thursday 24th March at 2.30pm at the Grosvenor Office, 70 Grosvenor Street, London, W1K 3JP. Please return your Form of Proxy (sent to you in the post) if you cannot attend. Any member wishing to attend is required to advise the office by 10th March in order to comply with security regulations.

New Intern
The Institution would like to welcome Amy Nelson to the team as our latest intern. Amy has just returned from New Zealand after studying environmental science at Waikato University and has brought a spirit of healthy competition to mundane office tasks.

IT FrustrationOnline membership renewals
Like every IT project in history the IES online payment system is over time and over budget. We therefore request that those members who have yet to pay their 2010 renewal call the office on 020 773 5516 or 020 7730 5519 to pay by credit or debit card or send a cheque to our office.

IAQM LinkedIn Group
The Institute of Air Quality Management has set up a new Linked-in group for IAQM members to network, share advice and best practice, browse for jobs and discuss the latest issues affecting air quality.

Environmental Scientist: Imaging a Low Carbon Britain
The mid-year edition of Environmental Scientist will attempt to envisage a low carbon Britain in 2050, with the assumption the Climate Change Bill’s objective of an 80% carbon emissions cut has been reached. Articles will conceptualise how transport usage and industrial sourcing will have changed. It will re-imagine the finance and communications industries based around predicted attitude changes towards prosperity and values. 2050 landscape changes will be discussed with regards to sustainable housing and building structures with a look at transition towns, and green urban and rural spaces. If any members are interested in contributing articles, please contact Amy Nelson.

Help Needed
Student Bojana Nanić-Holden, currently at Royal Holloway College, University of London studying an MSc in Environmental Diagnosis and Management, specialising in waste management, is looking to get involved in a MSc project linked with industry, Environment Agency, local authorities or consultancies in the waste management sector. Ideally she would like to team up with an organisation to investigate current or developing technologies in the waste minimisation field, or take on a consultancy based site specific study investigating the questions associated with potential landfill gas and leachate migration in relation to the proposed site uses.

Clean & Cool Mission
Leading UK clean technology companies visited San Francisco to engage with the US’s top technology businesses to see how they are approaching the emerging market opportunities that the race to address climate change presents. The businesses, already highly successful in the UK, met the media, investors and potential partners; they also engaged with experts on the financial and public policy agendas relevant to clean technology businesses operating in the US. Visit the blog of the event with posts, video and audio content from the organisers and entrepreneurs.

Climate change & security: 'tipping point for conflict'
In video interviews for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Rear Admiral Morisetti, the UK's Climate and Energy Security Envoy, said climate change is a threat multiplier and could be "the tipping point to cause conflict". Explaining this tipping point, Morisetti said: 'Climate change on its own is unlikely to start a conflict, but when you add it to all the other stresses you see around the world; food shortages, water shortages, poor health, loss of livelihood, weak governance; there's a potential for it to be a tipping point to cause conflict.'

SizzleSell the Sizzle. The New Climate Message
Futerra have published a guide arguing climate change is no longer a scientist's problem, it's now a salesman's problem. They call upon government spokespeople, climate campaigners and business advertisers to stop selling visions of hell, instead create and sell a new vision of a' low carbon heaven'.

Career opportunities within ES
The IES have written an article in 50:50 Magazine outlining the opportunities for students wanting to go onto a career in Environmental Science. See page 24 of the e-magazine.

Cutting back on carbon spending
The Green Alliance reckon shifting the UK economy from high to low carbon - by ending tax breaks to carbon intensive industry, increasing energy efficiency and halving the roads budget - could cut £12 billion from the projected £178 billion national deficit over four years. The report reviews the options for reducing spending and tax anomalies to accelerate the transition to a low carbon economy.

Mass Localism – NESTA Discussion Paper
A discussion paper regarding mass localism was released this month following inspiration from National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts’ (NESTA) Big Green Challenge, which was set up to stimulate and support community-led responses to climate change. The paper offers solutions to encourage central and local governments to galvanise widespread, high quality local responses to big challenges.
