The IES is on Twitter! We have been tweeting regularly on current news, national events and recruitment opportunities, with the odd insight into the workings of the IES Office. Our tweets are primarily aimed at our student members and fellow environmental organisations, but everyone is invited to join in. To follow us click the twitter button above or search for IES_UK.

CEnv LogoCEnv in a Day - July 2010
Want to become a Chartered Environmentalist but don't feel that you have enough time? The Institution is holding another 'CEnv in a Day' workshop on the 16th July. In the morning session candidates will be advised on editing their Stage 1 & 2 reports, then interviews will be conducted during the afternoon. To register your interest email here and download an application form. These workshops always prove very popular, so book early to avoid disappointment.

John Rose Award 2010 - Open to entrants
The fruits of scientific research do not always extend to where they are most needed. It is the mission of the IES, and of the John Rose Award, to help exceptional research fulfil its potential by communicating it beyond the scientific community. A £1000 grant will be awarded to a project that demonstrates both innovative, quality research in environmental sciences as well as the capacity to disseminate findings to the general public. The grant will be used to promote the project as widely as possible and so maximise its value. The Award will be officially presented at the 2010 Burntwood Lecture in November in London. The closing date for applications is 4th October 2010.

Carbon in Academia Questionnaire
The Carbon Trust would like to ascertain whether universities are applying their expertise to the challenge of carbon reduction. To this end they have designed a questionnaire for University staff.

The UK Election and the environment
As a charity rules of purdah prevent us from commenting on these, so your going to have to decide for yourself on the relative merits of the parties' environmental manifestos: Conservative, Lib Dems and Labour. You may wish to visit this site afterwards.

bottleDefra Report - Air Pollution: Action in a changing climate
The main issues concerning air pollution are summarised in this report and are considered alongside climate change data. This does not replace the more detailed strategy for air quality in the UK outlined in 2007, but provides a wider view as to how these two main drivers can be linked together for a more consistent approach.

Environmental Sustainability Knowledge Transfer
Network

The Environmental Sustainability Knowledge Transfer Network is accelerating the UK’s transition to a low carbon, resource and energy efficient economy by connecting businesses, universities, other research organisations and Government agencies, and catalysing innovation across a wide range of environmental technologies. StopCO2 Comparison - Volcano vs. Air Travel
Does anyone have the inclination to do a CO2 comparison? Iceland's Eyjafjoell volcano is emitting between 150,000 and 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day, a figure placing it in the same emissions league as a small-to-medium European economy.

A Fuel Cell that Runs on Water & Air
Could water be the coal of the future? Since water is a highly stable molecule we tend to believe it can only be the product of a spontaneous reaction. This article reports on a novel concentration fuel cell that runs on water and air.

Biomass Energy Solutions & the Challenge of Protecting Local Air Quality

Matt Holford

BiomassThe spectre of smoking chimney stacks has largely been banished into the history books of public health and pollution control. However urban skylines are expected to see a rapid increase in the number of new stacks as the drive for sustainable energy gathers momentum. However, the solutions offered by some renewable fuel systems can run into problems with local planning authorities keen to prevent increase in localised levels of air pollution. read more...

The IES in 2050

At the March Council meeting Mark Everard led a facilitated discussion about visioning how the Institution will look in 2050. The aim of this task is to create an article for the forthcoming journal envisioning Britain in 2050 if the country fulfils its carbon reduction obligations. read more...
