IES News

CSci LogoChartered Scientist
The Institution is very pleased to announce that on 20th July the Science Council Registration Authority granted a license to the IES to award the Chartered Scientist (CSci) designation. It has been the long term vision for the IES to add this Chartership to the membership services. Please see the article below for further details.

Pancheshwar DamDam Study Published
The Institution has published an report entitled The proposed Pancheshwar Dam, India/Nepal: A preliminary ecosystem services assessment of likely outcomes. Whilst the report expresses the views of the authors and not the Institution, we are happy to provide a platform for the publication of the report. The report, authored jointly by Mark Everard, the IES Chair, and Gaurav Kataria, who is based in Delhi, will provide a good reference guide for those members looking to write an ecosystem services assessment based on sound science. The conclusions of the report are potentially controversial, but part of our motivation in publishing special reports is to generate debate. If you have any comments please email them to Julia Heaton.

Behaviour graphicSustainability Sense: Linking Values
PP4SD and the IES have published a report exploring how values and emotions can be engaged to support a more sustainable lifestyle. Over the past 12 years PP4SD has developed and run sustainability training programmes for diverse groups of professionals. We have come to realise that there are many factors that sometimes inhibit and at other times promote progress, from purely personal to institutional. These obstacles and opportunities need to be understood and acted upon. PP4SD’s strategy is to address these issues and integrate them into new CPD programmes.

IAQMIAQM launches Ian McCrae Award
The Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) is pleased to announce the launch of the Ian McCrae Travel Award. As of 2010 the IAQM will be running the Award every year to support the professional development of early career air quality professionals. The £1000 grant will be used to enable the winners to attend an air quality conference in the UK or abroad by covering conference, travel and accommodation costs. This Award has been established in memorial to the life and work of Dr Ian McCrae, who passed away earlier this year. Ian was an internationally-respected air quality scientist and part of the IAQM committee.

Mayor's Air Quality StrategyResponse to Mayor's Air Quality Strategy
After discussion amongst the Committee, the Institute of Air Quality Management has responded to 'Clearing the air', the London Mayor’s draft air quality strategy for public consultation. The Institute's response is available on the IAQM website.

IAQM Meeting on Future NOX Concentrations
On 1st July, approximately 50 members of the IAQM met to discuss how air quality professionals can consider uncertainty in predicting future nitrogen dioxide concentrations. Presentations included 'Long Term Trends in NO2 and NOX in the UK' and 'Modelling future air quality', and were followed by lively discussion. A report on the meeting along with the presentations are now available online.

conserve meConserve Me
Conserve me aims to educate young people about worldwide environmental and wildlife conservation pressures, and to raise awareness of the value of biodiversity to all of us. We hope to improve understanding by illustrating the importance of scientific research in developing a sustainable future for a diverse range of species and ecosystems. Alongside their website, Conserve Me is running a six week schools programme to increase knowledge in the classroom on these issues and allow young people to gain practical experience through participation in scientific field experiments in the UK. It is hoped this will encourage greater uptake of science disciplines at A-level and beyond.

Tony JuniperTony Juniper at SocEnv's Reception
On the 30th June the Society for the Environment were joined by guest speaker Tony Juniper at their 5th Annual Reception. For the last 25 years Tony has worked for change towards a more sustainable society at local, national and international levels and is one of the UK's best known environmentalists. The editorial on Tony's speech details the message he gave the environmental professions.

TEEB Report Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Report
At the Global Business of Biodiversity Symposium in London on the 13th July a new report on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity was launched. The report outlines a global study focusing on the global economic benefits of biological diversity and the cost of failing to implement effective conservation measures. Practical guidance on integrating the economics of biodiversity and ecosystem services in business is also provided.

Sustainable Use of Plant Species
In response to concern expressed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora, scientists from Georgia are working with Microsoft Research Cambridge and Kew Gardens to create a model for ensuring the sustainable harvesting of Georgian snowdrops. The recent report details how a new computational model was developed to predict harvesting levels for exportation that could be supported by the snowdrop population, causing CITES to withdraw their concern.

VuvuzelaKeeping the Spirit of the Vuvuzela Alive
With the World Cup now over, millions will be left wondering what to do with their ill-bought vuvuzelas. Fortunately, the millions of vuvuzelas purchased during the World Cup are completely recyclable. These controversial instruments will therefore make their reappearance in the form of park furniture, railing crates, buckets and bowls. It is, however, unclear how easy it will be to recycle them in the UK, as Barry Turner of the Plastics 2020 Challenge explains.

SandwichAn Inconvenient Sandwich
In the UK we spend over £10 billion a year on sandwiches, chips, burgers and other such convenience food. The New Economics Foundation, an independent think tank, has published a report detailing research the environmental and social cost of convenience food.
